VIDEO: You pay taxes so they don’t have to.

April 22nd, 2010

On tax day, April 15th, while families were racing to file their tax returns, we dispatched volunteers to post offices around the state to spread the word about Connecticut’s corporate tax loopholes.

We heard over and over again: we’re paying our taxes — those huge corporations should pay their fair share too. It’s time to close those loopholes.

But with just a week left in the session, there isn’t long to act. We need your help:

Watch our video, and then tell your legislators it’s time to close corporate tax loopholes.

Help spread the word by sharing the video with friends and family. You can forward this email or share the video on Facebook.

According to the Office of Fiscal Analysis, those large, profitable corporations are avoiding $88 million a year in taxes by exploiting those loopholes. That money comes directly out of our schools, our hospitals, public safety, libraries and town budgets — or else it means higher taxes on families and small businesses.

You often hear that Connecticut is a high tax state. It’s easy to believe, and for working and middle class families, it’s true. But the dirty secret is that for Connecticut’s largest corporations, it’s anything but. Connecticut’s corporate taxes are the second lowest of all fifty states as a share of economic activity. 23 other states have already passed this legislation. And by stopping the largest companies from playing by their own set of rules, we’ll level the playing field for small businesses.

On tax day, when we told people around the state about some of the tax avoidance schemes that huge corporations like AT&T and Wal-Mart engage in, people were mad — but not always surprised.

Over and over again we heard: we simply can’t afford these tax loopholes for huge corporations any more. We compiled the answers into a short video. But now, with just a week left in the legislative session, I need your help to get that message heard in the legislature.

Watch our new video and then send your legislators a message to close corporate tax loopholes.

Don’t forget to share the video with your friends and family on Facebook or by just forwarding this email.

Thanks for all your help on this issue. We’re in the home stretch.
