Over the first hurdle

April 17th, 2010

It’s not every day that you can stand up against large, powerful corporations and win.

But yesterday, after a thousand people wrote letters, made phone calls, signed petitions and sent emails calling for an end to corporate tax loopholes, the Finance Committee heard us. They voted — overwhelmingly! — to pass ‘combined reporting’ legislation to stop the kinds of shell games that allow some of our state’s most profitable corporations to avoid millions in taxes and pass the cost onto us.

The co-chairs of the Finance Committee — who led the committee to a 40 – 15 vote — deserve our thanks for taking a stand for transparency and for fairness.

We’re sending Senator Daily and Representative Staples and all the legislators who voted to close corporate loopholes a thank you card from Working Families. I’d like to invite you to sign the thank you card with along with us.

Yesterday’s victory is just the first hurdle, of course. It’s the first time in years the Finance Committee has even given this measure a vote. Our bill to close corporate tax loopholes — the way 23 other states already do –  is finally getting a fair look, and not getting jammed up by corporate lobbyists without even so much as a vote. It will be up to us to keep the pressure high for the next months.

Stay tuned and I’ll give you more ways to make your voice heard and make an impact. But for now, I hope you’ll join us in signing a well-deserved thank you card to the legislators who stood up for regular families.

Thanks for all you do.
